Warren Buffett, the Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, addressed concerns at the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 3, 2024. He issued a warning about the emergence of AI-generated videos impersonating him, which have begun to circulate on platforms like YouTube. These videos feature fabricated commentary attributed to the renowned investor, who is famously known as ‘the Oracle of Omaha.’ Berkshire Hathaway pointed out that while the visuals may closely resemble Buffett, the audio often reflects a generic and artificial voice that is distinctly not his. In a recent communication titled ‘It’s Not Me,’ the firm emphasized a specific video that claims to share ‘the #1 Investment Tip For Everyone Over 50 (MUST WATCH),’ which provides misleading investment advice in a voice that impersonates Buffett. The company cautioned that those less familiar with Buffett might be misled by such content, with the investor expressing concern over the proliferation of these fraudulent videos. The advancing capabilities of deepfake technology and AI voice manipulation have raised significant alarms regarding misinformation and potential harm to the reputations of public figures. Earlier this year, the FBI noted that malicious individuals have used AI-generated communications to impersonate prominent U.S. officials in an effort to compromise sensitive information. Buffett has lamented the increase in impersonation, particularly by sophisticated AI models. Just weeks prior to the U.S. presidential election in October 2024, he warned against misleading narratives suggesting his endorsement of political candidates or investment products—a realm from which he has shifted his focus after past support for figures like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. As Berkshire’s chief executive, Buffett is set to retire at the end of the year, with Vice Chairman Greg Abel expected to take over.
