LONDON, Nov 12 (Reuters) – Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, is set to succeed Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell as head of two significant economic committees at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), according to an announcement on Wednesday. Powell has led the BIS’s Global Economy Meeting (GEM), which involves 30 leading central bankers, along with the Economic Consultative Committee (ECC) since 2019. He is slated to hand over responsibilities to Lagarde when his tenure as Fed chair concludes in May next year. This transition reinforces the influence of current and former ECB officials at the Basel-based institution, which is often referred to as the central bankers’ central bank. Notably, Pablo Hernandez de Cos, former governor of Spain’s central bank, replaced Agustin Carstens from Mexico as the BIS’s General Manager in July, while the ‘All Governors’ Meetings’, which include the BIS’s 63 member central banks, are chaired by Francois Villeroy de Galhau, the current Bank of France governor. The BIS has not disclosed the duration of Lagarde’s chairmanship for these committees, although her role as ECB President extends until the end of October 2027.
