A federal judge has turned down Capital One Financial Corp’s $425 million settlement offer for depositors claiming they were denied higher interest rates. The judge noted that the proposed payout was insufficient and that many account holders would continue to face financial disadvantages. This class action aimed to address allegations that Capital One maintained a low interest rate of 0.3% on its ‘high interest’ 360 Savings accounts while offering significantly higher rates of over 4% to new customers with similar 360 Performance Savings accounts. U.S. District Judge David Novak indicated that the plaintiffs’ claims warranted ‘significantly greater relief,’ as the settlement would provide less than 10% of the damages suffered by the 360 Savings depositors, who have been at a disadvantage for years. He has instructed both parties to engage in further negotiations to address his concerns. The settlement has faced opposition from eighteen states, including New York, which has also initiated legal action against Capital One regarding this matter.
