Following a roundtable discussion at the White House with aviation industry leaders on Thursday, Vance’s remarks came amid concerns from airline executives, including United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby and American Airlines CEO Robert Isom. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, now head of Airlines for America, also attended. Vance expressed that a prolonged shutdown could lead to significant issues during Thanksgiving travel, a view supported by Duffy who noted increased flight disruptions in November compared to October. Shares of United fell by as much as 3.7% after Kirby indicated the shutdown’s adverse effects on the economy, while American Airlines and Delta Air Lines saw declines of 2.1% and 2.7%, respectively. The ongoing government shutdown, nearing a month, has exacerbated staffing shortages within the aviation sector, causing notable delays; flights into major airports in Dallas-Fort Worth and Washington, D.C., have already been affected. Moreover, for the first time, New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport had to halt departures due to air traffic control staffing issues. Senate Democrats have dismissed a short-term funding proposal from the Republican-controlled House, demanding a renewal of Obamacare subsidies first. Duffy cautioned earlier this week that travel disruptions are expected to escalate as the standoff continues, with both the administration and congressional Republicans shifting blame onto Democrats. More than 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA agents are currently working without pay, making it challenging for many to manage essential living costs, which may lead to increased absenteeism. Historically, such lengthy shutdowns result in higher sick calls, leading to longer wait times at security checks and increased flight delays. Air traffic controllers recently experienced their first full missed paycheck, prompting Duffy and National Air Traffic Controllers Association President Nick Daniels to highlight the challenges faced by controllers, particularly those in training, at a press conference at LaGuardia Airport. Currently, air traffic delays attributed to labor shortages have surpassed the typical rate, which is around 5%, with some instances exceeding half of all late flights. However, data from aviation analytics firm Cirium indicates that, so far, on-time flight departures at major U.S. airports remain relatively stable. Past disruptions in air travel contributed to the resolution of the last government shutdown in 2019, when air traffic controllers calling in sick slowed travel along the East Coast, prompting President Trump to agree to a temporary reopening of the government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
(Bloomberg) — U.S. Vice President JD Vance warned that an extended government shutdown could complicate travel during the crucial holiday season, as the administration intensifies pressure on Democrats regarding the funding impasse.
