SAO PAULO, Nov 12 (Reuters) – Banco do Brasil (BBAS3.SA), the state-run banking institution, has adjusted its outlook for adjusted net income for the year, reflecting increased funding costs and a surge in defaults among local farmers. The bank now anticipates an annual net income between 18 billion and 21 billion reais ($3.33 billion-$3.89 billion), down from the earlier estimate of 21 to 25 billion reais. Banco do Brasil has been a cornerstone of agricultural financing in Brazil, but it is facing unprecedented default rates in its agribusiness portfolio, raising concerns among investors regarding its risk exposure. In the third quarter, the default ratio in agribusiness climbed to 5.34%, compared to 3.49% in the previous quarter, and surpassed the overall 90-day default ratio of 4.93%, which increased by 72 basis points. In light of these challenges, the bank stated in its earnings report that it has taken transparent and decisive measures to address the situation. Banco do Brasil reported an adjusted net profit of 3.79 billion reais ($701.35 million) for the third quarter, a 60.2% decrease from the prior year but slightly higher than the analyst expectation of 3.71 billion reais, according to LSEG. The bank’s return on equity, an important profitability measure, dipped 1,276 basis points year-on-year to 8.4%, remaining flat quarter-over-quarter.
