The yen surged after Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama hinted at the possibility of interventions to address excessive volatility and speculative fluctuations, prompting traders to remain vigilant for any signs of yen purchases from Tokyo. „The recent alerts from the Japanese government represent a noticeable escalation compared to what we\u2019ve seen lately,“ said Lee Hardman, senior currency economist at MUFG. „This is providing more immediate support for the yen.“ The yen rose 0.4% to 156.82 per dollar, although it was still near Thursday’s 10-month low of 157.90 and on track for a 1.5% decline this week. The currency markets have focused heavily on the yen this week, which has reached new lows amid concerns over Japan’s deteriorating fiscal situation, exacerbated by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s extensive spending policies. Since Takaichi’s election on October 4, the yen has depreciated approximately 6%. Her cabinet approved a significant economic stimulus package valued at 21.3 trillion yen ($135.4 billion) on Friday. „The primary concern now lies in the increasing risks of intervention,“ remarked Vishnu Varathan, head of macro research for Asia ex-Japan at Mizuho. „Interventions are expected to be opportunistic and temporary\u2014more like speed bumps than barriers.“ In July 2024, Tokyo invested 5.53 trillion yen, or nearly $37 billion, to intervene in the foreign exchange market to stabilize the yen from its 38-year lows. Against the euro, the yen remained near its lowest point since the euro’s inception, although the euro was recently down 0.5% at 180.61 yen. In the broader market, the dollar was poised for a weekly increase as expectations remained mixed regarding another potential interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve next month. A delayed U.S. nonfarm payrolls report released Thursday painted a varied picture of the labor market and did little to shift projections of a Fed rate cut in December, as policymakers continue to navigate economic uncertainties related to the ongoing government shutdown. On Friday, New York Fed President John Williams indicated that the central bank could still consider a rate cut in the near future, prompting markets to increase their bets for a rate reduction next month. Traders now estimate a roughly 60% chance of the Fed easing rates next month, compared to around 30% earlier in the day. The euro stood at $1.1517 and was set for a weekly decrease of 0.9%, remaining stable after preliminary PMI data indicated steady growth in euro zone business activity this month, despite a contraction in manufacturing. The British pound traded at $1.3078 as investors looked ahead to the upcoming budget, with economic data suggesting challenges for the economy before next week’s crucial tests for the currency and bond market, putting the pound on track for a 0.7% weekly loss. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback against a basket of major currencies, neared a 5-1\/2-month peak, last at 100.19. The Australian dollar stabilized at $0.6441 after a 0.6% decline on Thursday due to a broader risk-off sentiment in markets, while the New Zealand dollar climbed 0.3% to $0.56, having also suffered a 0.4% drop on Thursday. Both Antipodean currencies are set for weekly losses of over 1%. In the cryptocurrency space, bitcoin fell to a seven-month low of $80,553.36. (Reporting by Ozan Ergenay, Samuel Indyk, and Rae Wee.
